THE RULES

Quidditch is a fast, dangerous, exciting game in which two teams flying on brooms compete for points scored by throwing a ball – the Quaffle – through hoops on either end of a large grassy pitch.

There are three goal posts at either ends of a field. That field is called a Quidditch pitch. There are seven players on each side: the Keeper, the Seeker, three Chasers and two Beaters. One player is also appointed as the Captain. Professional teams will also have a manager.

  • The Chasers pass the Quaffle trying to throw it through one of the three hoops.

  • The Keeper is responsible for keeping the Quaffle from going through the hoops, similar to a Goalie in soccer.

  • The Beaters are equipped with large clubs, used to smack the Bludgers around, attempting to disrupt the Chasers from getting a goal.

  • The Seeker tries to catch the Golden Snitch, and in doing so, ends the game.

Quaffle = 10 pts. Snitch = 150 pts.

This scoring seems unfair, but typically Quidditch is played in a series of matches, and the team with the most accumulative points at the end of the series is the winner.

Quidditch World Cup

The Quidditch World Cup is played every year, similar to the Muggles Olympics. However, what some may not know is that the action actually starts two years prior to the World Cup.

Any country capable of producing a Quidditch team is allowed to play in the World Cup. The first round, or 'group round', is when all the participating teams are separated into 16 groups, and over the course of two years, play each other. The accumulated points are tallied and the winners from each group progress on to the World Cup.

Each year, they compete for the Inter-House Quidditch Cup, an award presented to the Hogwarts House team that earns the most points. Unlike the Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw teams, the Slytherin team has no qualms with cheating and unsportsmanlike conduct.

It has been noted that the Slytherin team employs players of brute strength, rather then skill. An example of this is Gregory Goyle, who was given the position of Beater in his fifth year. The Slytherin team's cheers are usually very insulting, like that of Weasley is Our King.
